The Key to Quickly Ripen an Avocado
Try this smart, quick way to ripen rock-hard avocados. We’ve all purchased Avocados that were hard, but don’t have time to wait for them to ripen on their own. Here are two tricks to ripen the firmest avocados.
Here’s the Key: Experts say by putting avocados in a brown paper bag with a banana, then leaving the bag on a sunny windowsill for 18 to 24 hours, will speed up the ripening process.
The banana and the avocados release a large amount of ethylene gas, which can speed up ripening, (The warmth of the windowsill may help speed the process, too.)
If waiting for ripe avocados won’t work for you, try this trick from California avocado growers:
Place 2 peeled, pitted avocados in a blender with 1 cup peas (fresh, or frozen and thawed); pulse until smooth. The peas will help soften the consistency of the unripe avocados but won’t affect the flavor.
